Hotel Gran Caribe Villa Marinera is essentially a fishing lodge that overhangs mangrove lagoons at the Cuban workers village of El Pueblo at the north end of Cayo Largo, far from tourist facilities. It primarily caters to anglers arriving as part of packaged fishing tours. The lodge is just yards away from the Cayo Largo Marina – handy for boat trips out to the boneflats.
The core of things is the simple wooden lodge, festooned with photos of anglers and other fishy miscellany. Needless to say, the simple restaurant serves mainly fresh seafoods. The Taberna de Pirata bar is a pleasant open-air bar with a nautical theme, and guests can kick up their heels with the Cuban hotel workers at the nearby La Carpa disco. There’s a small swimming pool that is useful mostly for cooling dips; for sunning and the aquatic pleasures, guests should head to the beaches, several miles away. Boats will run you there from the marina, and a shuttle runs several times daily.
The pleasing 10 wood-paneled guest rooms are in five duplex bungalows strung along the shore. High-peaked ceilings help carry off the heat, although rooms are air-conditioned and cross-ventilated. They’re also nicely furnished with a mix of contemporary wrought-iron and hardwood pieces, while balconies accessed via French doors have loungers.
Cayo Largo del Sur is considered one of the best diving spots, characterized by beautiful coral reefs in shallow waters inhabited by exuberant marine flora and fauna and at Villa Marinera guests can benefit from the facilities offered by the International Diving Centre which is considered as one of the best diving centres in the world. More information on scuba diving at this hotel is available on check rates & availability page.
